    Path Of Destruction

Found this site in one of the weather forums I hang out at. Really shows the power of nature and the science of satellite technology.

    Stop Already ! ! !

As bad as we feel we got hit, our concerns go out to our friends in Wisconsin. The Weather Here has been WETTTTT. We have measured 10.37" of rain so far. I am going to need a bigger graph! This compares to an average of 3.86". Although I did not have a rain gauge last year I did find the August 2006 rainfall was only 2.95".

I hope you folks are still dry out there, fortunately we have not had any flooding directly effecting us here at the old weather station. There is more to come over the next 2 days so stay high and dry.

I hope we do not beat the record of 17.10' in August of 1987!

    Over 7" ! ! !

We added a chart to our rain detail page at the request of one of our users. This chart shows the average rainfall per month for our area. It shows (as many of us probably figured out) that we are having a very WET August. Should exceed 7" sometime in the next day or so if the weather goes as fore casted.

    Got Gas?

A little off topic, but seems to be a regular gas war going on down Cicero Avenue out here. With posted prices of $2.929, could we be seeing under $2.90 by the weekend?

    That Was One .....

perfect day yesterday. Low humidity, slight breeze and moderate temps. Chalk one up for the good days. As happens in Chicagoland, did not last long. Rain falling nicely and temps are supposed to rise today into the 90's with high humidity.

I have to admit that our grass out here has never been greener. The park across from us does not have sprinkling and usually runs a pale brown. Not now ... looking good!

    Hard Rain

Woke up about 4:00AM to a noisy rain. It wasn't that it was raining hard so much as the 37mph winds that were pelting it against the windows. Finally calmed down and I fell asleep about 4:30AM.

We sure are having a wet one this August!

    Bad Night

Well we had a power outage sometime during the night. Things started raining and making noise around 10PM last night.

Our Northwest suburbs, in particular Rockford Illinois with 6" of rain, got it worse.

    We Are Up

The new domain is up and running. All files and data should be transferred and working. Might have to give it 48 to 72 hours to be sure. There is a redirect for the old wcw.illinoisgazette.com. This means if you log onto there it will send you to the new domain name. That is here

Please change your bookmarks to reflect this change; www.willcookweather.com.

I think this will be easier to remember and spread the word to your friends.

    New Domain

Well we finally "propagated" the old server data over to the new server. Now for the real news. The reason for the move is I needed more room to setup a new domain name for this website.

Over this weekend (already started) we will be switching to www.willcookweather.com. Some things right now may not function properly but I ask you to bear with us. When the switch is complete you will not even know since we will just redirect you from the old to the new automatically.

    Dog Days

Well the Dog Days of August are definitely here. What does that mean? To borrow from our friends at Wikipedia:

The term "Dog Days" was coined by the ancient Romans, who called these days caniculares dies (days of the dogs) after Sirius (the "Dog Star"), the brightest star in the heavens besides the Sun.

Popularly believed to be an evil time "when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies" (from Brady’s Clavis Calendarium, 1813).

The Dog Days originally were the days when Sirius, the Dog Star, rose just before or at the same time as sunrise, which is no longer true owing to precession of the equinoxes. The ancients sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of the Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius, believing that that star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather.

The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional timing of the Dog Days as the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11, coinciding with the ancient heliacal (at sunrise) rising of the Dog Star, Sirius.

Here we are looking at the mid to upper 90's all the way through the weekend .. ouch .. make sure your dogs have plenty of water. Add to all this it looks like our air quality is getting worse and the pollen count is going up ... yech!
